Center of Mass
How to play
You see a random shape – a blob, a block shape, a disc with a hole or an object like a hammer, guitar or mug.
Tap the point where the shape would balance on the tip of a needle. You can drag the pin afterwards.
Press “Check”: the true centre of mass appears, along with your deviation and points.
After three shapes you get your total score.
Find the centre of mass by eye
The centre of mass of a flat shape is the point where it is perfectly balanced. For a circle or square that's simply the middle – but not for irregular shapes. Heavy, wide parts pull the centre of mass towards them, while holes and thin handles shift it away from the visual centre. On a hammer, for example, it sits close to the head.
The deviation is measured relative to the size of the shape, so small and large shapes are scored fairly. The game trains your spatial reasoning and an intuitive feel for physics and balance – fun for students, engineers and anyone who likes a puzzle.
